Most dog trainers use a combination of tactics to train your dog, but the most desirable way to train a dog is through praise & respect.


The Truth is, there are only three ways to train any dog:
  1. Using Food – ie. offering food (reward training, bribery, clickers), withholding food (reprimand). We have all heard of asking the dog to do something and when the dog is successful the dog receives a treat. Or, the use of a clicker to let the dog know they are going to receive a treat.  Some of the most popular methods use bribery - it’s effective but the dog is responding to the treat. Not to you!
  2. Fear – ie. scaring the dog with physical or verbal abuse, threatening, hitting with newspaper, throwing objects etc. Some of the most effective and popular training methods are based in part on fear tactics. Most of us have heard of ways to correct behaviors with fear tactics. For example, the dog is jumping and you raise your knee when the dog jumps, or, the dog takes something from you that you do not desire the dog to have and you throw a can full or rocks at the dog,  the dog is playful biting and you bite back, rap the dog's mouth with something.  These are all effective, but the dog is responding in fear because he thinks a fear tactic will be used.
  3. Praise & Respect – ie. desire to please pack leader. It is more desirable that the dog understands what pleases you or what does not please you. It is more desirable for me to give the command "Sit", and then follow through and praise the dog for pleasing me.  All these methods work. However, we all want a high-spirited, predictable dog that understands what pleases us. Not a dog that is fearful, or is going to want food any time I communicate.
